Credit card FAQs
How does a credit card work?
A credit card is a way for you to borrow money. You can use it to buy things up to an agreed limit, then pay later – either in one go, or bit by bit. So, what is a balance transfer, or credit scoring? Do you always pay interest on a credit card? What’s the protection you get if you buy something with your NatWest credit card? And is it a good idea to get one in the first place? Our guide answers all these questions – and more.
Where can I use my credit card?
You can use our contactless NatWest credit card to buy things online and in store. It’s easy – just tap to pay. You can also use your card to take money out of cash machines, but you’ll often be charged a fee to do so.
Did you know our credit cards are Mastercard™? This means you can use them all over the world – wherever you see the Mastercard sign.
When you return home, you’ll get a credit card statement showing what you bought and how much cash you took out. You’ll see the cost in local currency – and then the cost exchanged into pounds.
Just so you know, some of our credit cards charge a small percentage to cover the foreign exchange fee.
How does credit card APR work?
APR stands for ‘Annual Percentage Rate’.
It’s an easy way for you to compare the cost of credit cards.
That’s because it gives you the full cost of borrowing, including:
• The yearly cost of borrowing (the interest you’d pay).
• Plus, any extra charges (like an annual fee).
Which credit card is best for me?
Is a 0% interest card best for you? Or a rewards card? What about a card that doesn’t charge you a foreign transaction fee when you’re abroad?
Our credit card guide describes how credit cards work and what types we offer, so you can decide what suits you best.
Do I need ID when applying?
When you apply, we often ask for ID to make sure we’re opening the account for the right person. The good news is that our security partner HooYu offers a safe, quick way to check your ID, so you could get your credit card faster.
This is thanks to their use of cutting-edge tech, including digital footprints, ID document authentication and facial biometrics.
HooYu could ask you for:
• Photo ID – like a driver’s licence, passport, or EU ID card.
• A short video or selfie – to compare with your photo ID.
• Proof of address – something like a driver’s licence, utility bill, bank statements or tax document might also be required.
