Solar panels

Are solar panels worth installing in the UK?

If you plan to stay in your home for several years, solar panels could help you save money on electricity bills. They work by making some of the electricity your home uses, so you may need to buy less from your energy supplier.

While sunlight is free, solar panels do come with upfront costs. These include the cost of the panels themselves and, if you choose one, a battery to store extra energy. It’s worth thinking about whether these costs make sense for you.

How much energy your panels can produce depends on your home. Things like the size and shape of your roof, and the direction it faces, can make a difference.

As well as saving money over time, solar energy is better for the environment. Using solar power instead of fossil fuels can help reduce your carbon footprint.

You can use free online tools to see how suitable your home might be for solar panels. For example, the Energy Saving Trust has a tool that can help you estimate how much energy your home could produce.

Do solar panels work when it's cloudy?

Yes. Modern solar panels still work when it’s cloudy. However, they make less electricity than they would on a bright, sunny day.

So how do solar panels work? Solar PV (photovoltaic) panels work by turning sunlight into electricity that you can use in your home. When less sunlight reaches the panels, they produce less electricity. This is why it’s important to think about where your panels will go. Panels work best on roofs that get plenty of sunlight and are not shaded by trees or buildings.

Solar thermal panels also use energy from the sun, but they work in a different way. Instead of making electricity, they use the sun’s energy to heat the water in your home.

Storing solar energy

Solar panels do not make electricity all the time. This means you may still need to use electricity from the National Grid, especially at night or on very cloudy days.

A home battery can help by storing extra energy your panels make during the day, which you can then use later. This can be useful if you want to rely less on grid electricity.

However, batteries come with an extra upfront cost. It’s important to include this in your budget when deciding if solar is right for you. According to Which? (2026), you can expect to spend from less than £2,000 to £6,000 depending on battery capacity, type, brand and lifespan.

Selling energy back to the National Grid

If you install solar PV panels, you may be able to get paid for the extra electricity you don’t use.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) lets energy suppliers pay households for electricity they send back to the National Grid. To qualify, your solar panels and energy supplier must meet certain rules.
