What is an executor account?
When someone passes away, it can be a tough time for those left behind. If you’re handling their estate, an executor account might be something you need to consider. But don’t worry, we’re here to guide you through it.
An executor account is a dedicated bank account that helps manage the finances of someone who has passed away. It allows the executor to collect any money owed to the deceased’s estate and pay any bills that need to be settled.
With an executor account you can:
- Collect payments due to the estate (like money from selling a house)
- Pay bills on behalf of the deceased (like maintenance of their property)
What You Need to Open an Executor Account
Before you open an executor account, there are a few things you’ll need:
- A Grant of Representation (a legal document that allows the executor to manage the deceased's estate in England or Wales) or Certificate of Confirmation (a legal document in Scotland that allows the executor to manage the deceased's estate)
- The deceased’s will and death certificate
- Your ID and proof of address
- To be over 18 years old
Steps to Open an Executor Account
Follow these simple steps to open an executor account:
- First, open a regular everyday bank account. You can do this online (opens in a new window).
- Next, once the account is open, complete an Executor Account Mandate form. You can find this form online (opens in a new window).
- Take the completed form, your ID, and proof of address to your local branch.
- If you don’t have a Grant of Representation or Certificate of Confirmation, you can still open an executor account, but you’ll only be able to pay the final funeral bill and receive payments.
Adding Additional Administrators
If you need to add additional administrators to the account, you can easily do this through our website (opens in a new window). Alternatively, you can fill out an Add a New Party to Account form (opens in a new window) and submit it at your local branch.
Once you've completed the forms, bring them to your local branch with the deceased’s will, death certificate, or Grant of Representation (England or Wales) or Confirmation (Scotland).
If you don't have a Grant of Representation (England or Wales) or Confirmation (Scotland), you can still open the Executor Account. However, you'll only be able to pay the final funeral bill and receive payments.
