Artificial intelligence (AI) threats

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technology which can learn and solve problems, allowing computers to think, act, and respond in a similar way to humans.

Generative AI (Gen AI) generates entirely new content such as text, images, videos, and sounds.  This can bring lots of benefits to our lives but can also make scams even more convincing by:

  • Creating more realistic scam email and message attempts.
  • Using deep fakes.  These are videos of someone that have been digitally edited to appear as someone else.
  • Using voice cloning. This is where someone’s voice is recorded and used to create audio content, made to sound like that person.

How to protect yourself

Follow our top tips to stay safe.

  • Pay attention. Look for anything unusual in the face, body movements, hands, emotions and background – they could be faked.
  • Look out for a sense of urgency. Scammers will want you to act quickly.
  • Be wary of unexpected requests for money or personal information. Contact the person or organisation first using your normal contact method to make sure it’s genuine.
  • Be wary of messages with attachments or links. Go to the official website by typing the web address into your browser.
  • Check the official email address of the sender. A random email address is usually dodgy.
  • Find out where the video comes from. Be wary if it’s not from an official account or an account you recognise.
  • Do your research. Celebrities promoting something they don’t usually talk about is likely a scam.
