How can I make an international payment?

This guide explains how to send an international payment using the NatWest Mobile App or Online Banking, and includes information on limits, charges, and requirements. Alternatively, you can visit a local branch to make an international payment in person. 

 

What's needed?

 

  • A personal current account.
  • Latest version of the NatWest Mobile App (for payments via mobile banking).
  • Bank details:
    • IBAN – Beneficiary’s International Bank Account Number used for payments to Europe and some other countries.
    • BIC/SWIFT code – Beneficiary’s Bank Identifier Code. It tells us which bank to send the money to. The code is 8 or 11 letters and numbers.
    • Account number – For payments to an account without an IBAN.
  • Other Information:
    •  NCC – National Clearing Code (NCC), payments to an account without an IBAN. They are also known as Routing Codes or Bank State Branch (BSB) codes for some countries (e.g. South Africa, Australia and New Zealand).
  • For some countries:
    • Bank name
    • Bank address

Mobile App

  • With Biometrics Registered: Up to £20,000 per day (Euro equivalent for ROI).
  • Without Biometrics Registered:
    • Saved payee: Up to £20,000.
    • New payee: Up to £750 per day (a maximum of 5 payments totalling £750 per day).
    • For payments over £1,000 to a new payee, use Online Banking.

 

Online Banking

  • Up to £20,000 per day.
  • For larger amounts, visit a branch with your debit card and valid ID (such as passport or driving licence).

 

For personal customers a payment control feature is available to freeze and unfreeze the international payment functionality for mobile/digital payments. To make an international payment via the mobile app or Online Banking, International Payment control must be unfrozen.

Making International Payments via Mobile App

Make a payment using our mobile app

  1. Log in to the app.
  2. Tap Payments at the bottom of the home screen.
  3. Select the correct account (swipe or tap Change account if needed).
  4. Tap ‘Send money’ then select ‘International payments’ and ‘Send money abroad’.
  5. Choose who to pay:

 

If paying someone new:

 

  1. Select country and currency.
  2. Enter the amount in GBP or foreign currency and then calculate rate.
  3. Choose payment type and fees.
  4. Enter payee details (full name, account, reference, bank details, address).
  5. Select purpose of payment, review messages, and continue.
  6. Complete biometric approval if required.
  7. Review details and tap Make Payment.
  8. Confirmation screen will appear.

 

If paying a saved payee:

 

  1. Select payee.
  2. Enter the amount in GBP or foreign currency and then calculate rate.
  3. Choose payment type and fees.
  4. Review details and tap Make Payment.
  5. A confirmation screen will appear.

Making International Payments via Online Banking

Make a payment using online banking

If paying someone new:

 

  1. Log in and select Payments & Transfers.
  2. Under International Payments, choose Pay someone new.
  3. Enter country, currency, and amount.
  4. Calculate exchange rate and click Next.
  5. Choose payment type and fees.
  6. Enter payee details.
  7. Review summary and authorise using card reader or mobile app.
  8. Confirmation screen will appear.

 

If paying a saved payee:

 

  1. Log in to Online Banking.
  2. Select Payments & Transfers.
  3. Under International Payments, choose Pay one of your saved payees.
  4. Select account and payee.
  5. Enter amount and calculate exchange rate.
  6. Choose payment type and fees.
  7. Review summary and confirm payment.
  8. Authorise if required (card reader or mobile app).

*SEPA is the Single Euro Payments Area in which you can make and receive euro payments. 

SEPA International payments must be made in euros to (SEPA) countries which are within the EU (European Union) or EEA (European Economic Areas)
