What are the common reasons why a credit limit increase would be declined?

Some of the reasons why we would be unable to increase your credit limit are:

  • A customer's debt exceeds their income, as a responsible lender we are unable to agree an increase
  • A card may have had little usage over last 12 months or be inactive
  • The credit limit is already at the maximum we can agree
  • The card may not be eligible for an increase in limit
  • Past borrowing with us may not have been satisfactorily repaid
  • Adverse information held on your credit report

Why would a credit limit decrease be declined?

If you have applied for a decreased credit limit, we are unable to complete your request if it would move your limit to less than £100 above your card balance.

You can ask us again to reduce your limit but please ensure there is £100 available between your current balance and requested limit. You can find this information within Online Banking from the Account Summary page, via ‘View account details’ under your credit card or on our mobile app.
