Handcrafted support for Rowood

Rowood Ltd homemade kitchens and joinery

Find out how NatWest helped Nick Rowland carve out a more defined niche for his specialist carpentry business in Oxfordshire.

Joiner Nick Rowland set up his Oxfordshire-based carpentry business, Rowood, in 2016 after years working as an apprentice and then in the construction sector.

Nick tells us about the challenges on his business journey – from the pandemic to soaring materials prices – and how NatWest supported his growth plans when he decided to invest in a purpose-built workshop.

“Ever since I started working as a carpenter, my goal had been to run my own business and control my own destiny. Since I set up Rowood six years ago, I’ve mostly enjoyed it. I like the work – we make doors, windows and kitchens mainly – but managing clients and cash flow can be a challenge.”

How is NatWest supporting you with your business challenge?

“NatWest first helped me out when we moved into our new workshop: we worked with our Relationship Manager, Wendy White, to arrange a mortgage for the premises, as well as the equipment we needed to kit it out.”

Describe the role your Relationship Manager played

“The whole process – from making the application to agreeing repayments – was completely hassle-free. Wendy really understands me and my business and whenever I need to deal with the bank, I always make sure to talk to her.

“We are also a member of the NatWest Mentor service, which provides us with guidance on employment matters – I have five members of staff working for me. This was invaluable when the pandemic hit in March 2020, and Mentor made sure I knew what my employees’ rights were when it came to furlough.

“NatWest also gave us a mortgage holiday at the start of the crisis, when we had to shut the business down temporarily. But we were soon back up and running.”

At what stage is your business now?

“The last two years have been very good for Rowood: people haven’t been able to get away on holiday so they have been spending more money on home improvements.

“Last year, we even had to turn work away because we couldn’t get the extra staff to grow the business. We have also been affected by supply-chain issues, although these have mostly resolved now.

“Rising prices have created a challenge in terms of cash flow, but again NatWest have been able to help us by providing an overdraft as and when we need it. At first, we were caught short because we were pricing jobs three or four months in advance – but now we always double-check prices and our suppliers are very good at warning us about future cost increases.

“I expect the retail business to slow down a bit as we come out of the pandemic, but we have started to work with more and more builders so we have a nice mix of customers now. This should ensure we can continue to be successful in the future.”
