Busy summer? Pause. Protect.

A safer summer for your business

Summer is a busy time, and scammers know it

When staff are away and trade is high, criminals may try to trick you into sending them money.

Know the signs, spot the scam, and stay in control.

Common summer scams to watch out for

Some scammers send emails that pretend to be people you know or trust.

They may claim to be:

  • A director, supplier, or colleague

They often ask for:

  • Urgent payments
  • Changes to bank details

They try to rush you by saying:

  • “I’m on leave — can you do this for me?”
  • “This must be paid today.”
  • “I’ve somehow missed this payment – can you pay it for me asap?”

Their aim is to stop you checking.

Why summer increases risk

Fraudsters take advantage when:

  • Teams are short‑staffed
  • Checks are rushed
  • New or temporary staff are helping
  • Managers are away

They hide fake requests among real, busy‑day activity.

Pause. Protect.

It can feel uncomfortable to challenge or delay a request, that’s exactly what scammers rely on. If it’s real, it can wait.

Before you send money:

  • Pause — does this feel urgent or unusual?
  • Protect — check and make a quick call using a number you trust

Scams succeed when there’s no time to think. Taking a moment to check could be all it takes to stop one.

Be in the know about IBANs

Scammers often use international payments because they are harder to stop or get back. An IBAN can look safe, but money may still be moved quickly to another account or country.

Always take extra care before paying overseas.

Simple ways to protect your business

  • Never rush payments
  • Keep email signatures simple
  • Be careful with out‑of‑office replies
  • Limit what staff share online
  • Follow approval rules, even when busy

You are your strongest password

Using your face or voice helps keep your business safe.

Biometric approval lets you approve key actions in the mobile app without a Card Reader. Instead of something you have, it uses who you are.

Your face and voice are unique to you. That makes them very hard for fraudsters to copy. These are simple steps that help keep scammers out - even if they know your details.

You can use biometric approval when:

  • Updating your details
  • Making payments over £750 up to £50K in the app
  • Approving other important actions

Fraud doesn’t take a holiday

But a few calm checks can help protect your business - in summer and all year round.
