Understanding mandates

What is a mandate?

A mandate sets out your signatories and signing rules. This tells us who can use your bank account and what they can do with it. For example, if you have a business account, there may be several people who can use it, each with different permissions.

What is a signatory or third party?

A signatory (or third party for sole trader accounts) is someone who has the authority to use your bank account. They can sign cheques, take out money, and manage other transactions.

What is an authoriser?

An authoriser is someone who can approve changes to your mandate. Authorisers are determined based on your business or organisation type.

What are signing rules?

Signing rules tell us who can use your business account and what they can do. You set these rules as part of your mandate.

For example, your signing rules could state that:

  • One person can sign for payments up to £500.
  • Two people are required to sign for anything above that amount.
  • Only certain people (directors, for example) are authorised to make payments above a certain amount.
