Bankline ISO 20022 FAQs

We're dedicated to helping you as the Bank adopts ISO 20022

The purpose of ISO 20022 is to create a common language for payments across all banks. It will also support enhanced payment data processing and improve the reconciliation process for payments within the UK and across the globe.

To help you prepare for the ISO 20022 changes coming to Bankline, please see the information below. We’ll continue to update this space as the ISO 20022 rollout progresses.

Recent and upcoming changes

October 2026 onwards

As part of the industry-wide transition to enhanced ISO 20022 messaging, several new data requirements such as structured addresses and optional enhancements will be introduced from October 2026.

These changes will help improve payment transparency, support compliance requirements and make payments easier to process across banking systems.

From November 2026 unstructured addresses will no longer be support in Bankline, you will need to update your existing templates and import files with the new structured address fields.

For more information, see the details below.

What changes are coming up in file import?

We're introducing new fields for Purpose of Payment (PoP) and reason of payments for international payments to certain countries. You’ll also need to switch addresses on payments to be in a structured or hybrid format. You can switch CHAPS and SEPA payments now, with non-SEPA international payments available to be updated in October (dates will be published soon). For more information on these changes see What are the ISO 20022 developments for Bankline file import?

If you're making international payments to countries that require a PoP code, you'll need to use the new fields from October 2026. For a list of countries that require a PoP code, see the What is an international Purpose of Payment (PoP) code? FAQ.

If you can't update your files before the changes take effect, you'll still be able to add this information directly in to the payments in Bankline, depending on your settings.
