Our purpose-led focus on sustainability

Climate is a key priority within our Purpose and is something that we are making notable progress against.

Since the announcement of our climate ambitions in 2020, NatWest has made notable commitments and advances regarding our climate propositions and approaches:

Our climate ambitions

How we plan to get there
  • We have an ambition to at least halve the climate impact of our financing activity by 2030, against a 2019 baseline, and align with the 2015 Paris Agreement.
  • We plan to reduce the carbon intensity of our Managed Assets by 50% by 2030, against a 2019 baseline, and to move 70% of Managed Assets to a net-zero trajectory.
  • We plan to reduce emissions for our operational value chain by 50% by 2030, against a 2019 baseline.
  • During Q1 2025, NatWest Group exceeded its target to provide £100 billion in Climate and Sustainable Funding and Financing between 1 July 2021 and the end of 2025¹. To reflect progress to date, we have announced a new target to provide £200 billion in Climate and Transition Finance between 1 July 2025 and the end of 2030².
  • We plan to phase out coal for UK and non-UK customers who have UK coal production, coal-fired generation and coal-related infrastructure by 1 October 2024, with a full global phase-out by 1 January 2030.

Our advancement of other goals

Sustainability and Societal
  • Through our Lombard brand, the UK’s largest provider of asset finance, we have launched a salary sacrifice scheme offering electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to businesses with over 250 eligible employees.
  • In July 2024, NatWest Group issued its first Electric Vehicle Green bond, making us the first UK bank to issue a green bond where the use of proceeds are intended to exclusively finance or re-finance electric vehicles.
  • We were a key contributor to the UK Housing Association Sustainability Reporting Standards, which aim to bring a consensus on how to measure and report on ESG performance in the social housing sector.
  • We have completed £2.8bn of lending to the UK social housing sector (as at 31 August 2024) against our £7.5bn target by the end of 2026. This follows our £3bn funding target achieved at the end of 2022, a first-of-its-kind target from a UK bank.
