Helping our customers to grow and seize new opportunities

Our Project & Infrastructure Finance teams regularly overcome complexities to deliver tailored financing packages for customers across a diverse range of geographies and sectors.

Amidst a difficult economic environment we’ve further grown our capabilities

2022 was a year of both challenges and opportunities to support you on some brilliant projects. Thanks to those, we finished it in the #1 spot in Inframation’s UK Project Finance table [1] with a financing volume of £2.1 billion – up from #3 in 2021.

During that same period, we became the sixth largest Project Finance lender across Europe with a financing volume of £3.66 billion over 40 transactions – which was a significant improvement from #12 in 2021. And we added some more European experience and capacity to our business, including a new team in Frankfurt.

Our focus hasn’t only been on the UK and Europe, however. We started 2022 funding the first large-scale offshore windfarm in the US off the Massachusetts coast and ended the year providing senior debt facilities to support the acquisition of an already operational 11 solar project portfolio in the US – the latter being our tenth US transaction in the last 18 months.

All these transactions reflect our commitment to supporting and delivering for our customers wherever they do business.

Focussing on energy

We’ve been financing energy projects since 1991, and over the last 12 months have continued to develop innovative financing packages for solar, onshore/offshore wind, interconnectors, battery energy storage systems, biomass and waste.

As well as financing the development of UK greenfield infrastructure, we’ve maintained our support for the Renewables sector, too; both here in the UK (where we were #1 Project Finance lender to the sector in 2022 by number of transactions), and across Europe (where we ranked 6th).

Thank you to our customers

Joe Taylor, Head of Project & Specialist Asset Finance at NatWest comments: “We’re delighted to have been able to support our customers through so many great projects in 2022, making us the Number 1 Project Finance Bank in the UK and Number 6 in Europe. We are also proud to have gained the same positions as a lender to the Renewables sector in the UK and in Europe in 2022, confirming our commitment to proactively help with the transition to net zero. This ambition is also reflected in our goal to provide £100 billion Climate and Sustainable Funding and Financing to our customers by the end of 2025.  We look forward to working on many more transactions in 2023.”
