Sibos 2023 – a pivotal chance to meet our clients and peers

James Waud tells us why Sibos is always a key event for NatWest

Sibos is the financial services event of the year, bringing together thousands of decision makers and experts from across the globe.

James Waud, our MD, Head of Banks and Sovereigns, Supranationals & Agencies, discusses how Sibos is identifying, first-hand the important issues affecting the payments industry.

We talked to James to see where he and his team will be concentrating their efforts in Toronto.

Why is being at Sibos so important for NatWest?

“Being at Sibos is hugely important for NatWest every single year but particularly this year. This is a pivotal moment for us to meet with our clients, our peers and even our competition to discuss the most important issues affecting our industry and the markets that we serve.

“It's also a great opportunity to reaffirm our commitment and focus on NatWest’s FI business and more broadly the transaction business franchise.”

What are you most looking forward to at Sibos 2023?

“I'm excited about being at Sibos in Toronto, because above all it's a great city and Canada is a great country to be in. It may sound like a cliché but meeting with so many clients in one place, in this environment, excites me.

“I learned last time that every meeting I have with clients at Sibos adds value which always create important insights for me and above all, new opportunities.

“I'm also looking forward to introducing our newly revamped banks franchise with new people in new roles and to discuss our new look FI franchise here.”

What are the top three priorities in the payments and transactions space for 2023-2024?

“We are a bank that's centred on our purpose. So ESG is a natural anchor to everything that we're looking to achieve in this space and therefore a priority at Sibos.

“Number two for me is innovation. This is and always will be a fast-moving space and we need to not just keep up, but to lead. We need to use the powerful insights we have as a leading retail and commercial bank to develop our overall proposition.

“The third thing from my perspective is maintaining our core. We're a trusted provider with solid existing relationships, so continuing to invest in our platforms and our products is critical. This is particularly in regards to ISO 20022 and other key regulatory reforms to make sure that our clients are confident in our existing market-leading platform.”
