Benefits of banking online
Great reasons to start banking online today
Manage your money when it suits you, using our safe and secure service.
Ready to bank online?
Our great service is quick, easy and safe. And it’s just as
easy to get started.
It’s easy to register, free and you get all of these great benefits:
- Transfer money between your own accounts
Transfer money between your accounts in just a couple of clicks. Ideal, for example, if you want to move money between your savings account and your current account.
Example: It’s almost the end of the tax year, and you’ve forgotten to put money into your cash ISA. Not a problem. With a quick transfer, the money leaves your current account and arrives in your cash NatWest ISA almost instantly.
- Pay bills
From your credit card to your council tax, you can settle your bills without leaving your sofa. It’s easy to make a one off payment, or manage the regular payments you make with your Direct Debits and standing orders.
Example: You’re on holiday, and you’ve suddenly remembered you need to settle your credit card bill. And the last thing you want is to pay any fees or charges. So what’s the answer? Just log in to online banking and make the payment from there.
- Send money to others
Send money to friends, family and others – where and when it suits you. You’ll find it simple to add a new person that you’d like to pay – or choose from a list of people you’ve paid in the past.
Example: Your nephew’s just started uni. And you’d like to send some cash to buy course books. Cash by post is a no-no, and a cheque will take too long to clear. Online banking is the answer – just send the money as a faster payment. It’s quick, safe and easy.
- Make overseas payments
If you want to make a payment to a non-UK bank account – you can do it online. You can make payments to accounts in a number of countries and choose from a same day or five day transfer.
There are charges for this service and exchange rates can vary.
Example: Your daughter is studying at university in Spain and has run out of funds. You can make a same day transfer to her Spanish bank account giving her quick access to some much needed cash.
- Manage your money
When you know exactly how much you have in your accounts, it’s a lot easier to keep tabs on your finances. Simply log in to see up to date balances on your accounts, along with mini statements.
Best of all, online banking is there for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Example: You’re desperate to grab that last minute holiday deal – it won’t be around forever. So just login to online banking and make sure you’ve got enough money to cover it, then go ahead and book with confidence.
- Find transactions
You can search through transactions – going back up to seven years. Search by the amount, the type of transaction or a detailed description.
Looking for statements? It’s easy to pick the date you’re looking for – or even search between two dates. And if you need printed statements to prove your income or identity, you can order up to three months' worth – free of charge.
Example: Your mobile phone company claims you’ve got an unpaid bill from two years ago. But you’re sure you’ve already paid. Simply log in to online banking and search for payments to the company – and find the proof you need.
- Printed statements
If you need printed statements to prove your income or identity, you can order up to three months’ worth – free of charge.
Example: You’ve turned off paper statements to help with the filing. But now you’re about to rent a property, and the landlord has asked for proof of your income. Easy. You can order up to three months’ statements – twice in any 12 month period.
- View certificates of interest
You can view details of any interest that is credited or charged to your account. A certificates of interest shows you how much interest you’ve earned on your account and how much tax has been deducted.
Example: You’re filling in your end of year tax return and need to know how much tax you’ve paid on your savings interest. Accessing your certificates of interest online makes completing your tax return quicker.
- Card-Reader
You’ll get a free Card-Reader – this helps confound the fraudsters and protect your accounts. It’s simple to use, and you only need your Card-Reader for some online transactions.
Example: Want to do more with online banking, but don’t want to take a chance with security? Our Card-Reader works by asking for something you know (a PIN number) and something you have (your debit card). This makes it even harder for the fraudsters.
- Security software
We give you free Rapport security software from the online security experts at Trusteer. This helps protect your online banking login details – and works alongside your existing security software.
Example: You like the idea of online banking, but you’re a bit concerned about security. So you install Rapport, which stops fraudsters from spying on your security details – helping to keep your identity safe.
- Online and Mobile Security Promise
Our priority is making your online banking experience as safe and secure as possible – that’s why we’ve introduced our online and mobile banking security promise.
This is our commitment to you in the event of fraud and gives clear guidance on what you need to do to protect yourself.
- Direct Debits and standing orders
It’s easy to view and cancel your Direct Debits – helping you control the organisations you pay from your account. You can also set up, amend and cancel standing orders. (Standing orders are ideal if you need to make regular payments of the same amount.)
- Update your details
You can also use online banking to update your email and mobile phone details. This is important, as we email you when your online statements are ready – and send you balance alerts by text message.
- Order a Card-Reader
Not got a Card-Reader or need to order a new one? You can do that online too.
- Alerts service
Our range of Alerts gives you even more account information – straight to your mobile. They help you keep up to date with your personal current and savings accounts, day and night.
- Remember me
If you always use the same private computer, you can let online banking remember your customer number. This makes it easier to log in and access your accounts. You’ll still need to enter characters from your security number or password, so no-one else can log in without this information.
If you use a shared computer, you should be careful when opting in to this service.
Online banking is about much more than just your current account, savings and credit cards. As an online banking customer, you’ve got quick and easy access to internet-only products, rates and services – on top of our standard range.
Make no mistake – we take your security very seriously indeed. In fact, we've invested in a host of measures that help protect you and your money.
Traditional online security relies on something you know – such as a PIN or password. So criminals are keen to steal these details, using techniques such as phishing attacks.
A Card-Reader helps to stop these criminals in their tracks.
It works by relying not just on something you know, but something you actually possess – your debit card. It generates a unique code every time it’s used, which you enter online using your computer keyboard.
This makes it very difficult for a criminal to steal money from your account.
Rapport works by helping to make sure you really are connected to your bank. This protects your valuable personal information – without slowing down your computer like some security software.
It works alongside your antivirus software and firewall – helping to give you as much protection as possible.
Although we can't share all of our checklists with you, we generally look out for unusual patterns.
That could mean transactions which are higher than the average on your account, or spending in countries which have been linked to fraud in the past.
When you log in to our online services, the system will constantly monitor what you do – and log you off if it senses you're inactive.
This helps you stay protected if other people can access your computer.
When you successfully login to our online banking service, the address bar (which starts with 'https://') will turn green. It’s an extra way of helping you check that a website is safe, secure and trustworthy.
