Mobile Phone Top-Ups at Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest Cash Machines Now Available
(14 May 2004)

  • Biggest development to the Banks' cash machines since their introduction 30 years ago

Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest customers are now 'topping up' their mobile phones without charge at the Banks' cash machines around Britain. The simple to use service has been available since 22 April and has already proven to be a popular service with customers. So far, nearly 35,000 transactions have taken place, with an average top-up value of 11.50 per transaction. Customers in the south east are currently the most active users and, perhaps not surprisingly, lunchtime is the most popular time of day to use the service.

The service enables the Banks' customers with a pre-pay mobile phone on Orange, Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile and Virgin Mobile networks, to 'top-up' direct from their bank account. Amounts between 10 and 50 can be credited to a mobile phone at one time at any Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest cash machine. Inserting their cash card, and selecting the 'mobile phone top-up' option on the screen, the Banks' customers simply follow the instructions shown below to top-up a pre-pay mobile phone:

  • Select the relevant mobile phone operator network (Orange, Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile or Virgin Mobile).
  • The amount to be credited to the phone (between 10 and 50).
  • The phone number to be credited (can be the Bank customer's own or any pre-pay number on Orange, Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile or Virgin Mobile networks).
  • Confirmation of the phone number to be credited.

Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest customers can visit the following websites: and to find their nearest cash machine, all of which will let them top-up their mobile phone.

The mobile top-up facility at Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest cash machines will be available not only to Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest customers, but also to those of Coutts, Adam & Co, The One Account and the Co-operative Bank*. It will also be available in due course to customers of other banks who choose to join the LINK service.
