Acknowledging our “investment in the right people and the right platform”

Deciding upon the award for Best US Private Placement Agent in 2022, voters – including issuers, investment banks, investors, and other market participants – recognised NatWest’s “loyal customer base and impressive share of deal flow”. NatWest has built a reputation as a pre-eminent bank for private placement across three decades of activity, with continued investment in the product and a market-leading team.

Showing leadership during volatile period and commitment to innovate PP market

In its recognition, GlobalCapital also pointed to NatWest’s leadership in the PP market during last year’s volatilities: “Yield targets for both investors and issuers were moving constantly from week to week. But in many ways the volatility played to NatWest’s strengths. Years of experience on both sides of the Atlantic meant there was no team better able to help clients position themselves amid market movements.”

Furthermore, voters were impressed by NatWest’s determination to further develop the market with innovative deals, including sponsor-driven infrastructure transactions, and particularly ESG-related transactions. Voters agreed that the sharp increase in volume of ESG private placements in 2022 – more than the three previous years combined – was due in no small part to NatWest. The bank has also played a key role in opening the PP market to new UK sectors such as housing associations and universities.

NatWest customer Bunzl wins Best US Private Placement of the Year award

NatWest’s PP transaction highlights in 2022 included a $400 million three-tranche deal for specialist international distribution and services group, Bunzl plc. The transaction, which represented the first deal for a BBB+ issuer on an ‘MFL’ basis, has won GlobalCapital’s “Best US Private Placement of the Year” 2022 award.

NatWest also worked on the runner-up for best deal, a $850 million PP for German utility firm EnBW AG.

Maintaining a skilled and experienced team a key success factor for NatWest

Commenting on the awards, Rob Busby, NatWest’s Head of Private Placements, said: “We’re thrilled and couldn’t be prouder to have won this coveted award, with the market recognising our mentality to strive to be the best and lead the market. We’ve maintained a very skilled and experienced team, which is crucial in a market where most deals are unrated and bespoke. Our team has an unrivalled ability to position unrated credit with investors and has continued to innovate across currencies, structures and geographies as the market has evolved beyond the traditional US investor base. We’re equally excited to hear that our customer, Bunzl, has won GlobalCapital’s Best US Private Placement of the Year award – many congratulations.”

Andrew Blincoe, Head of Corporate Banking & Structured Finance at NatWest, added: “Our commitment and capabilities to support our customers in finding long-term capital in the private markets has consistently been one of our areas of strength across the franchise and I'm delighted to see our private placement capability recognised in these awards.”
