Manage your money
Make the most of your money throughout the year.
Want money left over for the good things in life? Here are 12 common-sense tips to help your money go further.
- Don't buy new books - get second hand ones from your union or other students
- Pay less for travel - use your 16-25 Railcard to get 1/3 off most UK rail fares
- Save on everyday spending - get money off top brands with the discount card built-in to your Railcard
- Buy value brands in supermarkets. They're much cheaper and most are just as good as big brands
- Buy in bulk with your housemates to save money every week, and take advantage of 'two for one' offers
- Be prepared for bills . Put money aside, or set up direct debits, so you are sorted if lots of bills turn up at once
- Watch out for big charges on your mobile, especially on long-distance calls, or calls while you're overseas
- Get free financial tips from your Student Manager in NatWest branches
- Live on campus if possible - it's often cheaper than renting private accommodation
- Know your limit and if you're about to exceed your overdraft, speak to your Student Manager. This could stop fees and charges
- Employed? Find out if you need to fill in a P38(S) (PDF, 62KB) so you're not taxed on what you earn. You should also fill in form R85 (PDF, 40KB) so interest is paid gross on your current account and savings. It saves tax being deducted at source
Work part-time
A part-time job can help you earn extra cash - but don't overdo it. As a rule try not to work more than 15 hours a week, so you can keep up with your studies.
The minimum wage for 18 to 21 year-olds is £4.60 per hour. It's £5.52 if you're over 22.
Student overdraft
When you have a NatWest Student Account, an interest-free overdraft offers you all the flexibility you need. You'll pay no interest when you're within your limit and you can adjust your limit whenever you want. Better still, it costs nothing to set up.
Student Credit Card
A Student Credit Card is another handy option. The £500 limit means you'll be prepared for any unexpected surprises that student life throws at you.
