Information within this page

Common definitions

Annual Equivalent Rate (AER). This is a notional rate used for interest bearing accounts which illustrates what the gross credit interest rate would be if paid and compounded on an annual basis. It helps you to compare the effective rates of credit interest on different accounts.

Gross Rate. This means the interest rate you are paid before the deduction of income tax.

Net Rate. This means the interest rate you are paid after the deduction of income tax.

Offset banking

If you choose to offset your First Reserve balance against your Offset Flexible Mortgage, you won't earn interest on the money in your First Reserve account as that balance is being used to reduce the interest you pay on your mortgage. If your First Reserve balance is higher than your mortgage balance, you will earn interest monthly on the amount over and above your outstanding Offset Flexible Mortgage balance. Cashback is paid provided the terms and conditions of the First Home Saver are met. The amount of cashback is based on the lowest savings balance in the 6 months before the mortgage is drawn down. It is exempt from tax as it falls within HM Revenue and Customs Statement of Practice SP4/97.

Offset Banking

If you choose to offset your First Reserve balance against your Offset Flexible Mortgage, you won't earn interest on the money in your First Reserve account as that balance is being used to reduce the interest you pay on your mortgage. If your First Reserve balance is higher than your mortgage balance, you will earn interest monthly on the amount over and above your outstanding Offset Flexible Mortgage balance. The rates in the table above include an introductory conditional bonus equivalent to 1.00% gross p.a. (0.8% net p.a.) and a conditional bonus equivalent to 0.25% gross p.a. (0.20% net p.a.). These bonuses are available on accounts opened between 20 April 2009 and 1 August 2009. These bonuses are payable for the first nine months from account opening where a minimum balance of £10,000 is maintained during this time.

Your bonus interest will be paid monthly for nine consecutive months (along with your standard interest payment) starting on the 15th day of the month after the month in which you open your account.

Following the nine month period, a conditional bonus equivalent to 0.25% gross p.a. (0.20% net p.a.) will be payable with your monthly interest provided you meet the conditions detailed under the table Advantage Private Reserve including 0.25% conditional bonus (on accounts opened before 20 April 2009 and after 1 August 2009). In any month where these conditions are not met, the rates shown in the table Advantage Private Reserve (excluding conditional bonus) will apply.

Regular Saver rates

If more than £250 per month is paid into the account, the excess will receive a nominal rate of interest equivalent to the lowest interest rate tier of the Instant Access Reserve Account.

If you fail to pay at least £25 into the account in any calendar month, make a withdrawal or close your account during the term, your account will be converted to an Instant Access Reserve Account and we will pay you a nominal rate of interest on the balance of your Regular Saver Account from the date that you open your account to the date that your account is converted equivalent to the lowest interest rate tier of the Instant Access Reserve Account.

We calculate interest on a daily basis. This interest is paid into your Instant Access Reserve Account on the first business day after the end of the term* when the account will convert to an Instant Access Reserve Account.
