Homeowners Mortgage Support Scheme

As part of our ongoing commitment to our customers, NatWest is participating in the Homeowners Mortgage Support (HMS) scheme.

HMS is a specialist scheme to assist mortgage customers encountering financial difficulty due to a temporary drop in income, and is backed by the Government. It is designed to assist people who are having difficulties meeting their mortgage repayments, but are likely to get their finances back on track in the near future.

How does the Homeowners Mortgage Support scheme work?

  • HMS enables eligible borrowers to reduce their monthly mortgage interest payments to affordable levels to help them get back on track with their finances if they suffer a temporary loss of income - for example if they are relying on one income instead of two or if they have had their hours cut.
  • HMS allows borrowers to reduce their monthly mortgage repayments by deferring up to 70% of their monthly interest payments for up to two years. The interest not paid is added on to the balance of the mortgage, to be paid back after the borrower leaves the scheme according to a schedule agreed with us.
  • While on the scheme, we will freeze any repossession action as long as the agreed payments are maintained. This gives our customers increased confidence that they are no longer at risk of losing their home.
  • HMS is one of a number of forbearance options available to mortgage customers and should be considered alongside other options.
