NatWest Creates 1,000 New Jobs In Branches
(01 April 2004)

NatWest today announces yet another major investment in its branch network, with the planned recruitment of more than 1,000 new members of staff. Customers across the country will benefit from this new recruitment drive as positions for new cashiers and customer service staff are created.

The move is driven by NatWest's desire to provide the highest levels of service from its branches to its growing number of customers - NatWest has just welcomed its 10 millionth personal customer through its doors.

This is just the latest in a number of customer focused enhancements at NatWest since the takeover by The Royal Bank of Scotland Group in March 2000:

  • March 2000 - NatWest abolished its branch closure programme.
  • Summer 2000 - 1,000 customer advisers recruited to NatWest branches.
  • Autumn 2002 - new technology introduced, enabling real-time banking for customers.
  • NatWest has embarked upon a 150 million branch refurbishment programme. All 1,640 branches will have work carried out to improve access for all customers, cut waiting times and provide more private interview space.
  • Last year, NatWest made it possible for all customers to call their local branch.

Benny Higgins, Chief Executive of NatWest Retail Banking, said: "We believe that it is vital that customers have the choice in how they deal with us, be it through branches, over the telephone, ATMs, or the internet.

"At a time when some promote the virtues of branchless banking, our customers are telling us that they value the service NatWest offers them on the High Street. We are delighted to be investing further in our extensive branch network."

Notes to editors

  • Including this additional 1,000 staff, NatWest will employ 17,300 staff in its branches across England, Scotland and Wales.
  • NatWest staff are located throughout Britain and no jobs are outsourced overseas.
  • Independent research from Datamonitor shows that more than two-thirds of bank current account customers visited a branch over a three-month period (Consumer Attitudes to Current Account Banking in the UK - Datamonitor 2003).
