Foreign exchange
Helping to manage working capital to source and produce the goods your customers want.
When it comes to making foreign transactions, we offer a full range of services, from straightforward currency exchange to complete risk management solutions, meeting the simplest or most complex customer needs.
We use foreign exchange (FX) hedging tools to help reduce the risks associated with foreign currency fluctuations. Our solutions give customers greater certainty over their future cashflows, enabling them to plan for the future with increased confidence.
See our Commercial Exchange Rates which give business customers a better deal when buying or selling foreign currency for non-cash transactions when compared with the 'tourist' exchange rates available on the high street for currency notes and coins.
Foreign Currency Exchange
Whether over the phone or via our e-commerce platform, it's easy and straightforward to execute your foreign currency exchange needs. You'll enjoy access to our depth of market liquidity in both major and emerging market currencies.
FX Risk Management - why consider FX hedging?
Exchange rates can be volatile. If they move in an unfavourable manner, they can have a negative impact on your finances, the cost of imports and the value gained from exporting goods and services. This can result in adverse affects on your profitability and cash flow.
Our solutions can help you:
- Have greater certainty over future income and costs.
- Make financial forecasts with more confidence.
- Manage your cash flow more effectively.
We help you identify the FX risks you may be facing. We then quantify these risks and work with you to manage them, leaving you to focus on what you do best - running your business.

Customer Requirement
- The customer would like to know the GBP cost prior to sending the payment.
Solution
- An FX specialist from the UK Corporate FX Sales team will work with the customer to build a longer term portfolio of hedges.
Scenario 2 – FX Risk Management
Situation
- The supplier switches production from the UK to factories in Asia.
Customer Requirement
- The company will need to pay for product from Asia in USD but sells solely in the UK (in GBP).
- The customer recognises that FX will have a major impact on the price at which it can sell its product.
Solution
- The customer uses the online trading tool (RBSMarketplace) to fix the GBP/USD rate and thus the GBP cost of known future USD expenses.
Scenario 3 – Bespoke FX Solutions
Situation
- After the supplier concludes the initial hedging, it transpires that the FX rate has moved in an unfavourable way against the customer, and subsequently the high street is asking for price reductions.
Customer Requirement
- The customer needs access to an FX specialist who can help determine an appropriate FX risk management solution.
Solution
- An FX specialist from the Corporate Risk Solutions team will work with the customer to build a longer term portfolio of hedges.
- The solution reached will limit the customer’s USD costs and offers flexibility such that favourable FX moves can be passed onto the price sensitive high street.
