Crime needs to be managed like any other business risk. Theft of equipment or data from premises may leave the business unable to trade for an extended time, and a business with limited resources might not survive this period of little or no income.

Almost six out of ten small businesses fall victim to crime each year, with those in the north of England and in urban areas most likely to be targeted, according to a new report by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). Its 2005 'Cracking Business Crime' report also found that crimes against small businesses are not reported in more than half of cases, with many business owners believing the police "would not be able to find the criminals".
